“Fomos mortos”, afirmou a publicação em comunicado. O jornal foi criado com recursos do Prêmio Nobel da Paz recebido pelo último líder soviético, Mikhail Gorbachev.

O jornal suspendeu sua edição impressa na Rússia em 2022, mas continuou produzindo conteúdo on-line e operando em seu escritório no centro de Moscou.

“Em 9 de novembro, apagaremos as luzes da casa onde vivemos por 30 anos, desligaremos nossos servidores e partiremos”, afirmou. “O jornal não existe mais. As autoridades russas e os serviços de segurança do país forçaram nossa equipe editorial a encerrar suas atividades.”

As autoridades não fizeram comentários imediatos. O governo havia classificado a publicação como “agente estrangeiro”.

O Kremlin, que acusa serviços de inteligência estrangeiros de tentar fomentar o descontentamento na sociedade russa, já afirmou no passado que algum grau de censura é necessário em um momento em que a Rússia está envolvida no que descreve como uma luta existencial contra o Ocidente em torno da Ucrânia.

O influente blogueiro militar Rybar deu uma ideia de como a publicação é vista em alguns círculos oficiais ao republicar um texto de ataque que acusava a Novaya Gazeta de promover sistematicamente uma narrativa antirrussa e de demonstrar satisfação com as dificuldades enfrentadas pelo Estado russo.

Fundada em 1993, em linha com a visão de Gorbachev de glasnost, ou abertura, a Novaya Gazeta (“Novo Jornal”) tornou-se um dos veículos mais influentes da Rússia e uma defensora da democracia, com reportagens investigativas sobre corrupção e cobertura crítica da política russa.

Dmitry Muratov, cofundador e editor-chefe do jornal por muitos anos, dividiu o Prêmio Nobel da Paz de 2021 e dedicou a honraria a seis colegas assassinados em razão de seu trabalho, entre eles a jornalista investigativa Anna Politkovskaya, que escreveu sobre as guerras de Moscou na conturbada região da Chechênia.

Assim como outros veículos de comunicação que não são controlados pelo Estado e fazem críticas ao governo, a Novaya Gazeta passou a sofrer pressão crescente depois que a Rússia lançou sua guerra em larga escala na Ucrânia, em 2022. Foram introduzidas amplas regras de censura que preveem longas penas de prisão para quem “desacreditar” o Exército russo ou divulgar o que as autoridades consideram notícias falsas.

“Desde o início da ‘operação militar especial’ na Ucrânia e a introdução de acusações criminais por ‘desacreditar o Exército russo’, não podemos noticiar os acontecimentos mais importantes e trágicos de nosso tempo”, afirmou o jornal. “A censura se aplica a praticamente todas as esferas da vida civil.”

Muitos de seus próprios jornalistas e profissionais de outros veículos fugiram da Rússia em 2022, acrescentou a publicação. Alguns ex-funcionários criaram uma publicação impressa e on-line independente, sediada na Letônia, chamada Novaya Gazeta Europe. As autoridades de Moscou classificaram o veículo como uma “organização indesejável”, o que, na prática, proíbe sua atuação na Rússia. A publicação continuará funcionando.

Na Rússia, a Novaya Gazeta informou que seu site havia sido bloqueado, sua licença de publicação impressa revogada e suas máquinas de impressão confiscadas. Um de seus editores, Oleg Roldugin, estava em prisão domiciliar à espera de julgamento, acusado de uso indevido de dados pessoais, crime que prevê pena de até dez anos de prisão.

Os escritórios do jornal no centro de Moscou, dos quais agora está sendo despejado, também foram alvo de buscas pelas autoridades. A residência de Sergei Sokolov, editor-chefe da publicação, também foi revistada neste mês.
