O resultado mais recente marca uma recuperação em relação ao crescimento de 5,29% do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) registrado no segundo trimestre (abril a junho), mas ainda representa uma desaceleração frente à expansão de 5,61% observada nos três primeiros meses do ano. Uma pesquisa recente da agência de notícias Reuters com economistas apontava para uma mediana de 5,18% de crescimento para o terceiro trimestre.

O consumo das famílias, que representa mais da metade da economia, cresceu 5,04% no terceiro trimestre — o ritmo trimestral mais lento em um ano. Os gastos do governo, por sua vez, subiram 8,95%.

Mohamad Edy Mahmud, vice-diretor da agência de estatísticas da Indonésia (Statistics Indonesia), afirmou na quinta-feira que o aumento na compra de veículos e no turismo doméstico impulsionou o consumo privado. Ele acrescentou que grande parte da expansão nos gastos públicos decorreu de atividades de construção, pagamentos de bônus a servidores públicos e um programa de refeições gratuitas para crianças.

O vice-ministro das Finanças, Suahasil Nazara, declarou no início desta semana que os gastos públicos entre janeiro e setembro atingiram 2,66 quatrilhões de rúpias (US$ 147 bilhões) — um avanço de 19% em relação ao ano anterior. O governo acelerou os desembolsos para as principais políticas do presidente Prabowo Subianto, incluindo o programa de refeições gratuitas e o desenvolvimento de cooperativas rurais em todo o país.

Bhima Yudhistira, diretor executivo do centro de estudos Center of Economic and Law Studies, citou dados oficiais de agosto que indicam a criação de 21.400 cooperativas rurais, com outras 13.900 em fase de construção — um fator que, segundo ele, impulsionou o investimento e o setor de construção no terceiro trimestre. Prabowo lançou o programa de cooperativas em julho do ano passado, mas a construção das instalações ganhou ritmo apenas nos últimos meses.

Yudhistira observou que a desaceleração no consumo das famílias é "um sinal de enfraquecimento do poder de compra". "É compreensível que o público questione por que um crescimento elevado não está se traduzindo em benefícios tangíveis, particularmente para a classe média, que enfrenta dificuldades para encontrar emprego formal, enquanto algumas regiões ainda lidam com desastres naturais", afirmou.

Yudhistira disse que até mesmo os gastos governamentais começaram a perder fôlego, apontando para uma contração de 1,6% no segundo trimestre e alertando para um crescimento mais lento nos próximos trimestres.

Syafruddin Karimi, professor de economia na Universidade Andalas, observou que, embora os gastos privados tenham crescido no trimestre, "o principal desafio não é sustentar o consumo por meio de estímulos de curto prazo, mas sim fortalecer a renda produtiva, para que as famílias possam elevar seus gastos sem assumir um ônus maior de endividamento".
