“Estamos cientes de relatos sobre um possível problema de segurança e estamos investigando ativamente”, afirmou um porta-voz da Binance.

“Neste momento, não confirmamos qualquer impacto nos fundos dos usuários. Nossas equipes de segurança estão analisando todas as informações relevantes com urgência, e forneceremos atualizações por meio dos canais oficiais da Binance assim que tivermos informações verificadas.”

Changpeng Zhao, cofundador da Binance, disse que a maior corretora de criptomoedas do mundo pode ter sofrido um ataque hacker, mas ressaltou que os fundos dos usuários permanecem seguros. Zhao, conhecido como CZ, não está mais à frente da gestão da empresa, mas continua sendo seu maior acionista.

A Binance conta com um fundo de reserva e seguro emergencial, chamado "Secure Asset Fund for Users" (SAFU), criado em 2018 para servir como uma rede de proteção aos clientes em “situações extremas”, segundo a corretora. O fundo SAFU é mantido, geralmente, em um patamar próximo a US$ 1 bilhão, embora tenha oscilado no passado conforme as movimentações do mercado, informou a Binance em 2024.

As duas maiores emissoras de "stablecoins" informaram que tomaram medidas para congelar suas respectivas moedas na plataforma da Binance. Paolo Ardoino, CEO da Tether, afirmou em uma publicação na rede social X que congelou mais de US$ 1,5 bilhão em sua stablecoin, em decorrência de “um possível ataque hacker à Binance”. Jeremy Allaire, que comanda a Circle Internet Group, informou que US$ 800 milhões em sua moeda foram congelados diante de “relatos de uma possível exploração de vulnerabilidade envolvendo a Binance”.

O Bitcoin caiu até 3,7% — ficando abaixo de US$ 79 mil, seu nível mais baixo desde setembro — no encerramento do pregão nos EUA, acompanhado por uma onda de vendas em outros tokens. As ações nos EUA também fecharam em baixa, com o índice de tecnologia Nasdaq 100 recuando quase 1,4%.

“O esvaziamento de 'hot wallets' [carteiras digitais conectadas à internet] não é novidade no setor de criptoativos, mas, neste caso, o montante representaria um ataque cibernético significativo contra a maior corretora de criptomoedas do mundo”, afirmou James Seyffart, da Bloomberg Intelligence. “É, sem dúvida, uma situação muito negativa. E é mais um incidente em uma sequência recente”, comentou, referindo-se a uma série de problemas de segurança ocorridos ultimamente.

O sentimento do mercado, que já estava fragilizado, foi ainda mais abalado por relatos de uma possível falha de segurança envolvendo a plataforma Binance. Caso confirmada, a ocorrência se somaria a uma sequência preocupante de incidentes de segurança no ecossistema cripto. Nos últimos meses, centenas de milhões de dólares foram subtraídos da Bitget, enquanto episódios de adulteração envolvendo dispositivos da Ledger também resultaram em perdas na casa dos milhões de dólares.

Os investidores já esperavam uma maior volatilidade no mercado de criptoativos esta semana, com o vencimento de US$ 11 bilhões em opções previsto para sexta-feira. Tudo isso ocorre poucos dias antes das eleições de meio de mandato nos EUA, marcadas para a próxima semana — um pleito no qual os Democratas podem retomar o controle de uma ou de ambas as casas do Congresso, o que poderia abrir caminho para um escrutínio regulatório mais rigoroso sobre o setor.

Roubos e irregularidades em corretoras têm sido uma constante ao longo da trajetória de quase duas décadas das criptomoedas, provocando, por vezes, longos períodos de desvalorização no mercado — o caso mais notório foi o colapso da FTX, de Sam Bankman-Fried, em novembro de 2022. No que talvez continue sendo o incidente de invasão mais famoso, a corretora de Bitcoin Mt. Gox, sediada no Japão, foi alvo de um ataque em 2011. Com o passar do tempo, os invasores subtraíram ativos que, aos preços atuais de mercado, valeriam bilhões de dólares. A Mt. Gox acabou declarando falência.

“Isso causa um dano enorme ao setor de criptomoedas, dada a recorrência de ataques bem-sucedidos nesse espaço”, afirmou Tian Zeng, CEO do fundo de investimento em criptoativos Third Eye. “O fato de essas brechas continuarem sendo exploradas torna o cenário perigoso, especialmente em uma era em que novos modelos de inteligência artificial são lançados a cada duas semanas.”
