De acordo com a imprensa paraguaia, que mostrou imagens de presença policial em frente à residência de Peña, o político do Partido Colorado foi informado da ordem e ficará detido em prisão domiciliar até se apresentar à Procuradoria. Segundo fiscais afirmaram à imprensa local, Peña deve se apresentar às 11h da manhã.

Agentes que ingressaram na residência de Peña confirmaram à imprensa paraguaia que o ex-presidente ficará em prisão domiciliar, conforme determinoua a ordem de detenção emitida minutos após a aprovação do impeachment do conservador no Senado do país. A ordem também determina a prisão do ex-diretor do Banco Central, Carlos Carvallo.

Opositores de Peña questionaram, durante o processo de impeachment, se ele ainda estava no país. Até a ação dos agentes judiciais nesta sexta, que confirmou sua presença em Assunção, ele só havia se manifestado pelas redes sociais.

A presença de policiais em frente à residência de Peña foi simultânea à chegada de seu vice, Pedro Alliana, ao Congresso do país para sessão extraordinária convocada para que ele fizesse seu juramento e assumisse a Presidência. Em seguida, o deputado Antonio Barrios foi aprovado pelo Congresso como novo vice-presidente.

O Senado do Paraguai aprovou por unanimidade o impeachment de Peña, nesta sexta-feira (6), ao fim de um processo tenso, marcado por embates e protestos às portas do Congresso. Após a votação, Peña foi imediatamente afastado do cargo.

Com a decisão, o líder conservador se torna o terceiro presidente paraguaio a deixar o poder antes do fim do mandato desde o fim da ditadura de Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989). Alliana, que teve pedido de impeachment rejeitado pelo Congresso na quinta, assumiu a Presidência ainda na noite desta sexta ― manifestantes nas ruas do lado de fora do Congresso protestaram contra o juramento de Alliana sob o argumento de que ele também está envolvido no escândalo que derrubou Peña.

"O que venho prometer é concreto: os compatriotas que, hoje, atravessam um momento difícil em consequência de um descalabro financeiro, serão compensados plenamente", afirmou Alliana em discurso no Congresso. Ele, contudo, não deu detalhes de como fará isso. O, agora, presidente também prometeu enviar rapidamente um projeto de lei para racionalização de recursos do Estado.

Peña tomou posse em agosto de 2023, com mandato até 2028. Sua chegada ao poder garantiu mais anos de hegemonia ao Partido Colorado, que governa o país há quase 70 anos, desde a ditadura de Stroessner. A única interrupção foi o governo do ex-bispo de esquerda Fernando Lugo, derrubado também por impeachment em 2012. A legenda domina a vida política do país desde 1947.

Durante a votação do impeachment, Peña foi representado pelos seus advogados e não compareceu ao Congresso. Sua saída coroa uma semana turbulenta, marcada pelo escândalo de fraudes envolvendo o ueno bank, principal banco digital do país, com 2,9 milhões de clientes ― o país tem cerca de 7 milhões de habitantes.

O colapso da instituição financeira congelou os depósitos de milhões de clientes e provocou uma onda de protestos. Com o impeachment, Peña perde a imunidade e poderá ser processado criminalmente.

A investigação respingou em Peña, ex-investidor da holding do banco e responsável por, em 2023, nomear Carlos Carvallo, então presidente-executivo da companhia, para a presidência do Banco Central do Paraguai. Carvallo renunciou ao cargo nesta semana.
