A diferença constatada pelo levantamento, compartilhado no momento em que a demanda pela biomassa avança mais rápido do que a oferta, pode distorcer projeções de mercado para os próximos anos, disse em entrevista ao Valor Fábio Gonçalves, cofundador e presidente da Canopy.

“Mesmo as grandes empresas de papel e celulose compram volume significativo [de madeira] no mercado, e, agora, temos uma expansão acelerada de usinas de etanol de milho, que consomem biomassa sem ter feito um planejamento de plantio sete anos atrás. Está todo mundo concorrendo pela mesma madeira no mercado ‘spot’, e as projeções anteriores para oferta estavam otimistas demais”, afirmou.

Segundo o estudo, a produtividade média nacional estimada para o eucalipto aos sete anos de idade, quando atinge o momento de corte, é de 27,6 metros cúbicos por hectare por ano, menor que o índice de 34,5 metros cúbicos por hectare por ano divulgado no último relatório anual da Indústria Brasileira de Árvores (Ibá).

A diferença não resulta de imprecisão em estatísticas anteriores, mas da ampliação do escopo do estudo desenvolvido pela empresa. Os anuários da Ibá, disse Gonçalves, compilam dados declaratórios de associadas, que cobrem entre 60% e 70% da área no país, enquanto expedição feita pelo levantamento mapeou a base nacional completa de plantios de eucalipto, que, segundo o estudo, é de 8,3 milhões de hectares.

“Até então, os indicadores refletiam as áreas das empresas associadas, que são altamente tecnificadas e bem manejadas. O levantamento passou a contemplar os cerca de 40% de produtores independentes, cujos plantios contam com manejo menos tecnificado.”

O resultado se apoiou no mapeamento por satélite de 622,8 mil talhões de eucalipto e validação presencial em 204 municípios e 14 Estados. A metodologia usou sensores remotos, inteligência artificial e escaneamento a laser com a tecnologia de sensoriamento remoto conhecida como LiDAR terrestre, em 438 parcelas de campo.

Para Gonçalves, o setor chegou em ponto de estabilização da produtividade e apresenta produtividade ainda menor em determinadas regiões. “A solução passa por melhor planejamento e expansão da base florestal em cima de áreas de pastagem degradadas, além de pesquisa em cima de novos materiais genéticos resistentes e adaptados a essas novas condições de clima e soluções voltadas para o melhor manejo desses plantios.”
